If you’re reading this, chances are that you’re looking for a snoring solution. Chances are also that you have probably already tried the most commonly known snoring remedy: changing your sleeping position. But it doesn’t matter how many cushions you pack next to you, how many of your dogs you allow to sleep behind your back, you always wake up in the same snoring position: on your back. It might now be time for a more aggressive approach. Read on to find out more about alternative snoring solutions.
Snoring is most commonly caused by muscles being too relaxed. We’re talking about those muscles that allowed you as teenager to play tongue hockey with the neighbor’s daughter. Chances are that you haven’t done that in a while if you’re snoring. Before you go and flirt with all the neighbors on your block you should read on. When the tongue is too relaxed it falls back creating an obstruction in your airway. The air you breathe in is then forced through, making your uvula vibrate against the back of your throat.
The first option that is usually tried to keep the tongue from over-relaxing falls into the home remedy category. When you go to search for snoring remedies one of the most commonly found is an exercise program to help train the tongue. Unfortunately, it take more time and effort than what most people are willing to do in order to get any results that will stop snoring. In fact, if you want to try an exercise program, instead of trying one that targets the tongue, you might have more success, especially if you are overweight, if you exercise your entire body. By losing weight, the neck size often decreases resulting in less fatty tissue that can block the airway. Even though this approach can be successful, it does not always work for every person and it may take several months of both a change in diet and exercise to see if this is the right solution.
A quicker option is surgery. There are four types of stop snoring surgery: Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, laser-assisted uvuloplatoplasty, palatal stiffening operations and radio-frequency ablation. Have you physician explain them to you and listen carefully to which one he or she recommends. It also can’t cause any harm for you to do some research yourself or to get a second opinion. But remember, stop snoring surgery should be a last resort. Even as a last resort you might not want to try this if your doctor hasn’t given you enough evidence that there really is no other way.
A very effective snoring solution that is non-invasive is a stop snoring mouthpiece. A snoring mouthpiece positions your jaw in such a manner that your tongue won’t obstruct your breathing. These little gadgets are available everywhere nowadays, but for best results the stop snoring mouthpiece should be able to be customized for your mouth and your particular jaw position, especially if you have an excessive overbite or underbite. This not only makes the anti snoring mouthpiece more comfortable to wear but allows you to position it to more effectively stop snoring.
Another critical element to look for when selecting a stop snoring mouthpiece is the ability to adjust the forward positioning. Since everyone’s jaw anatomy is unique, the forward position of your lower jaw to keep the tongue from obstructing the airway is also unique. This is why a one-size-fits-all stop snoring mouthpiece is not nearly as effective a snoring solution as a mouthpiece that can be customized and adjusted to the most optimal forward position that completely opens your airway and prevents the tongue from blocking your airflow.
